The Alchemist of the Analog Lens

"I see the world through the grain of analog film—where the imperfections of the moment become the soul of the image. Welcome to my archive."

                                                             Robo Melo

Born in Slovakia and based in Prague, Robo Melo is a visual storyteller whose work occupies the compelling space where documentary realism meets fine art abstraction.
With a formal background in filmmaking from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, Melo has spent over three decades documenting the world with an uncompromising, empathetic lens.

His portfolio is a masterclass in duality.
For nearly twenty years, Melo served as a primary creative force within the iconic BelAmi studio. Working as a documentary cameraman, he gained unprecedented access to the world behind the scenes of adult cinema.
In the quiet moments between takes, he captured provocative, aesthetically charged portraits of models like Jim Kerouac, Jack Harrer, and Kevin Warhol, treating the male form—in all its states—as a landscape of social and physical significance.
This exclusive archive, often referred to as "Belami’s Secret Eye," remains a cornerstone of his artistic legacy.

The other half of his soul is dedicated to urban atmospheres and the poetry of the world’s landscapes.
From the sun-drenched alleys of Greece and the mystical corners of Asia to the vibrant, raw energy of South Africa, Melo captures the "inner landscape" of places.
His work in the Cape Town region, utilizing unique tungsten film and cross-processing techniques, transforms reality into a cinematic, dreamlike vision where light and shadow collide.

These two worlds—the body and the city—are aesthetically inseparable. Through the use of analogue film, vintage cameras, and expired stocks, Melo creates a unified universe.
He embraces grain, light leaks, and chemical "imperfections" as a rebellion against the cold perfection of the digital age.

This unique approach to capturing reality, which Melo calls Melomography, is a celebration of the unpredictable soul of analog film
Melo’s work has been published in numerous European magazines and gained international acclaim with his first monograph, Secret Eye (Bruno Gmünder). His upcoming second monograph, released by a premier Spanish publisher, continues to weave together these threads of life, body, and travel.

His works are held in private collections worldwide, appealing to those who seek art that is bold, authentic, and beautifully imperfect.
